Applicants with foreign educational certificates
University qualifying documents (this may also be a combination of documents) must be recognized by the Bavarian
Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle (office for record recognition). The Office validates the equivalence of the applicant’s university qualifications to either the General or the (specific) field-restricted Hochschulreife (university entrance qualification) obtained in Bavaria. Certification of recognition/validation of foreign certificates is generally free of charge and is sent directly to the applicant.
You can download the form (in either English or German) at:
www.stmuk.bayern.de
The following documents are to be included with the application for recognition:
- The original of your university qualifying document (this may also be a combination of documents), in the language of your home country; or an officially certified copy of the original (in the language of your home country). Officially certified copies, with an official seal, can be obtained, for example, from a notary or your civic authorities (town hall).
You must include a certified German translation of that qualifying document (originals in European languages need not be translated). The translation must be the original and made by a publicly appointed and sworn translator from the original document. German translations made in a country outside Germany can be given a legalization notice at an embassy or consulate of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- A copy of your identity card or passport with personal identification details. If you have several nationalities, you are required to specifiy this and include a copy of each of the passports.
- Ethnic German resettlers must also document this status by presenting the original of their Displaced Person ID or certification as an Ethnic German resettler, or by including an officially certified copy.
- An informal, curriculum vitae, listing previous courses of study.
A stamped, self-addressed envelope (small envelope with € 0.55 in stamps, or large envelope with € 1.45 in stamps, for returning originals)
Officially certified photocopies as a rule are kept on file at the Bavarian Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle (office for record recognition).
We ask that applicants residing abroad provide us with a contact address (last name, full address) in the Federal Republic of Germany for use in processing and returning any originals of your certification transcripts.
If you are unable to specify a German contact address, we ask that you send an international reply coupon instead of stamps.
The processing of the documents may take some time. Therefore it is recommended that you send your application by December to the Bavarian office for record recognition:
