Library
Head:
Dipl.-Bibl. Peter Heinrich
The HFF Library is one of the largest libraries specialized in film, television and media in Germany. It offers literature on all aspects of this field (history, aesthetics, theory, technology, business, economics, law), as well as reference works and address directories, bibliographies and filmographies, numerous screenplays and theoretical literature on screenwriting, film festival catalogs, and biographies of film and television personalities. The collections currently comprise approx. 60,000 volumes, more than 300 professional periodicals (180 of them as current issues), some 5,000 feature films on video cassette and 4,700 DVDs.
In 1996 the Library was able to purchase an extensive private collection (the Eberhard von Berswordt Private Archive) of film historical books, periodicals, film programs, distributors' catalogs, etc., mainly from the period 1920 to 1960.
Books are kept open access, filed systematically according to topic. To facilitate research, the entire library is electronically documented in the HFF Online Library Catalog, indexed according to people's names, subjects, and other criteria.
The URL of the catalog is:

The periodical and film collections are not yet searchable online, making them available for research only on the Library premises.
The Library primarily serves the needs of HFF instructors and students (with check-out privileges). The interested public is also welcome, though, to use the collection free of charge (without check-out privileges). The reading room is equipped with desks, and photocopying machines are available.
