Department II - Technology
Heads:
Professor Franz Kraus
Professor Peter C. Slansky
A director, production manager or producer must be proficient in film and television technology, and in their means of expression; only then can they head a film crew, creatively realize their cinematographic ideas and competently supervise, plan and guide their production. With this in mind, our technical training follows the primary principle: as much technology as necessary, as much creativity as possible. Technical knowledge isn't taught as an end in itself, but always with regard to designing images.
The data of a digital television camera, the functioning of a film scanner, the characteristic of a microphone or the spec sheet of a film stock remain pure theory, if they're not made tangibly understandable through the senses. The aim, after all, is knowledge that can be applied. That's why all the courses are in two parts: All theoretical course elements are accompanied by their practical application by the students, followed by an analysis and evaluation of the results.
The Technology Department provides more than instruction: Its sixteen-member staff are also in charge of the entire technical production infrastructure at HFF – from camera sign-out to postproduction, even the projection in the screening room. This integrated organization is unique among film schools. Our technical equipment has a high standard and is constantly being expanded and upgraded. This we owe, to a large degree, to our sponsors and partners. This also gives our students the opportunity to learn an early lesson: From a camera worth several hundred thousand euros to the smallest cable–each tool, each accessory is essential for the final result, the finished film.
One look at the closing credits shows: Many films are produced largely through student work. Camera, sound, lighting, direction, production management: The students divide up the tasks among them. In doing so, they learn how vital the interplay of all components is to a good result – your film.
The practical and theoretical examinations and the realization of the numerous film tasks demand a great deal of effort, concentration and diligence from the students undergoing their Technology training. In return, they get a solid foundation of knowledge and comprehensive competence in the techniques of film design: the basis for bold ideas and creative experiments.
