‘Sure you don't want anything? Well, it's up to you. Let me know if you change your mind, Papa.’ Making coffee, rolling cigarettes, getting warm. Zsuzsanna and Sandor have been living under a bridge in Munich for more than six months.
FEBRUÁR is a sober confrontation with the antagonisms of daily life. A glimpse into their home, the nature of their companionship and their embrace of the little things.
Despite facing various hardships surrounding economic security, adequate shelter and health care coupled with the fact that Zsuzsanna and Sandor are marginalized members of society as they belong to the minority ethnic group of Roma, their approach to daily life is insightfully humble. Whilst these are circumstances which cannot be ignored and are ever present, in telling their story, I was inclined to convey the connection and disposition the pair embodies individually as well as together within their daily lives notwithstanding these hardships. Despite the adversity they face on the daily, it is apparent that laughing, conversation and moments of connection are parts of Zsuzsanna and Sandors life. These things matter. I felt it was important to shed light upon their daily routine and the optimism I saw within these acts whilst spending time with them rather than focusing on the grand narrative surrounding those considered ‘homeless’.
